The sixth invited lecture was held on Wednesday 18, 2019, on the topic of early childhood education in Japan. Akiko Hayashi and her collaborator, Joseph Tobin, gave a lecture about three case studies in Japanese primary schools, using a video-cued ethnographic method. Thirty education students, as well as non-education students and the general public, attended. In the panel discussion, one main focus was on how the emic and etic approaches to studying human development can be merged to situate “Japaneseness” in the existing literature.
