Vocational education in China has been promoted by central government initiatives as a means of cultivating the necessary human resources for the nation. Yet, such vocational education is not always under strict state control, unexpectedly involving a wide range of actors. This ground-breaking research explores the true nature of vocational education as it developed through a complex web of varied actors from productive, governmental and academic sectors, in that which is one of the world’s largest countries in both area and population. The study carefully analyses primary sources, such as policy documents and interview surveys, along with actual curriculum and teaching practices, shedding light on institutional, educational and cultural factors that make up China’s vocational education.
